Question

What is a face lift?

Answer

image of a woman preparing for a face liftThe technical term for a “face lift” is a “rhytidectomy” and this is a form of cosmetic surgery for the “tightening of the face”.  As we age the effects of gravity, sun exposure, and stress can be seen on ones face; an example, being creases forming between the nose and mouth.  A face lift does not stop this aging process but it can help to “set back the clock” for you.  A face lift works to improve the most visible signs of aging by tightening underlying muscles in the face, by removing excess fat deposits in the neck area, and by re-draping the skin of your face and neck, giving you a younger appearance.  This procedure has grown in popularity over the years and was first tried by celebrities/stars/older wealthy women.  Most candidates who receive a face lift are in their 40’s – 60’s.  However, the procedure has also been performed successfully on those in their 70’s and 80’s.  A facelift can make you feel and look younger and it may therefore also boost your self-confidence and sense of attractiveness.

With any form of cosmetic surgery there is some risk involved in this procedure, however, by using a professional you should not run into any problems.  The surgery itself usually lasts for a couple of hours and it involves a surgeon separating the fat/muscle from the skin after an incision(s) is/are made.  Fat is removed and the muscles are tightened; then the skin is pulled tightly back in place and the excess is removed.  Stitches keep everything in their place and the healing process begins.  Expect that your stitches will be in for around 5 days and allow a couple more days for your scalp to heal and you should be good to go.
