Question

What is Kwanza?

Answer

Kwanza is a unique African celebration that is neither political nor religious in anyway.  The focus of this celebration is on African family values, the communities responsibilities, commerce (business), and one’s self improvement.  It is a re-affirmation time for African and African American peoples and their history, ancestors, and culture.  It is not a substitute for Christmas, which is a common misconception about this celebration.  The word “Kwanza” in the African language of Kiswahili means “first fruits of the harvest” and this celebration is embraced by millions around the globe.

Kwanza takes place over seven days from December 26th until January 1st.   And it is based on the seven guiding principles of the Nguzo Saba, where one principle each of the seven days is observed.  The seven guiding principles include: Umoja (oo-MO-jah) which means “Unity” and stresses the togetherness of family and community; Kujichagulia (koo-gee-cha-goo-LEE-yah) which means “Self-Determination” and requires that one makes decisions that are best for their community and families; Ujima (oo-GEE-mah) which means “Collective Work and Responsibility” and this reminds one of their role in the community and world, as a part of the past, present, and future; Ujamaa (oo-JAH-mah) which talks about “Cooperative Economics” and emphasizes ones ability to meet common needs through community/mutual support; Nia (NEE-yah) which means “Purpose” and has one set personal goals that will benefit the community; Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah) which means “Creativity” and has one use their creative energy to built and maintain their community; and finally, Imani (ee-MAH-nee) which means “Faith” and focuses one on their traditions and self-worth/ability to succeed.

With Kwanza there are candles that represent each of these seven principles that are lit as each day comes and they are held in a “Kinara”.  Kwanza also has gift giving and a traditional feast known as “Karamu” that is held on December 31st.
