Question

What is chivalry?

Answer

Did you hear someone mention that chivalry is dead?  Did you always wonder what this meant?  Well, you have probably always understood what chivalry was, you just might not have known what the exact meaning of the word was.

Chivalry actually refers to the medieval institution of knighthood and the ideals associated with this such as courtly love, honour, and knightly virtues.  With an actual chivalric code that was developed and followed by these men of status.  One aspect of this code deals with romance, love, and relationships.  This chivalry in regards to women deals with the concept of courtly love; where a man is to serve his lady and after her all other ladies with a gentleness and graciousness.  It involves doing things for a woman such as opening her car door or holding her arm as she climbs some stairs; or helping an elderly woman with her groceries.  Treating a woman like a lady and making her feel loved and cared for.  These types of actions today might also be associated with what we might refer to as being more “old fashioned”.  A way of treating women with the kind of respect and care they deserve.  So next time you take your special lady out don’t laugh or say “I told you so” when her feet get sore but rather pick her up and carry her in your arms and show her that both romance and chivalry are still alive and kicking.
