I guess for lots of folks have a gym membership and a place to go to exercise makes them do it, yeah? Or are there more people who have a gym membership and waste money every month because they never go? I am certain that gym membership spike after the holidays where we eat so much and then go unused or canceled come spring or sooner.
It makes real sense I think to focus on exercise in our daily lives. Can we bike to work or walk or some such? I do not get to do it anymore, but a job I had for a bit was a 24-mile roundtrip commute. I biked it daily... and what a workout it was. That might be extreme for some, but some easier to swallow variations likely exist for most if just change our routines.

Gyms are not a rip-off, they serve a purpose. They become a waste of money though if you sign up, work out eagerly for 3 weeks and then drop out. I've seen cases where gyms are packed right after Christmas and New Year and then membership tapers off around February. Then the crowd swells again just before bathing suit season and then by end August, the crowds get smaller.

absolutely true!
why do you think Ballys wants to sign people up FOR LIFE?
by the way, are they still doing that lifetime membership thing?

Many people can only seem to stick with it when they have friends at the gym who stay on them.

I wasted some of my money on gym membership. I never went to the gym for a single day. I think them do some purposes. However I think its not a great deal since any simple exercises like walking are good for health.

Gym memberships are expensive. That is for sure. If you can make sure that you will go daily - then no they aren't a rip-off. Just because you pay doesn't mean you will get in shape - like anything else you have to work at it. I prefer to work outside when I can- bike, walk, etc. Cost is free.

I don't go to the gyms for my exercise trainings and programs. I have an immobile (whatever you call it) bike in my room. But I use it very often. I prefer walking and jogging outdoors.

i see a lot of people who are eschewing gym memberships in favor of just exercising in their neighborhood, running errands on foot or by bike... it is really neat to see.

I would not say that gyms are a rip off, but from a personal perspective, it would be much cheaper for me to pay as I went than to purchase a yearly pass.
All I know is that I have dropped 30lbs over the last 2 years by eating less junk.

Before we had children I used to go to the gym every week night for at least an hour, so for me it wasn't expensive at all as I used my membership as it is designed. Now I just run up constitution hill everyday as there isn't a gym here.

My gym is relatively cheap - I pay about $140.00 for 6 months, I think that's a steal. I go about 4 times a week. The gym owners are also very avant-garde types. They have these really modern machines. And they upgrade equipment once a year. They've expanded since I joined 10 years ago and I think I get good bang for my buck.
