Question

How Much Does it Cost to Replace a Broken Door

Answer

Replacing a damaged door can be simple and quite inexpensive if you’ve got the right equipment and a little knowledge. Depending on the extent of the damage to the door and the door jamb, you may need to replace the entire unit. So how much does it cost to replace a broken door in your home?

Keep in mind when choosing a replacement door that it’s always easier to install a smaller door, and it can be more difficult and labor-intensive to install a larger one. Exterior doors are subject to wear and tear from constant use and exposure to the elements. Hardware and weather stripping can deteriorate, as well as the door and frame themselves. Repairs are generally inexpensive, but they may not necessarily produce good long-term results. Replacement can be costly, but the extra money spent may result in savings on your energy bill. This, in turn will increase the resale value of your home and will make it more comfortable.

Several options are available when purchasing replacement exterior doors. Whether you prefer a solid wood, metal or a decorative door, your options are endless. You need to check with your local home improvement store or a well-respected building contractor to determine what type of material will fare best in your climate. This will help ensure the longevity of your investment. You will also want to take into consideration the “swing” of your current door, as it will be simplest to stick with a similar set up. An “inswing” (I/S door) opens in, where an “outswing” (O/S door) opens out. Also note whether your existing door opens to the left or right, as this determines hinge placement. You will also need to decide if you would like a door with panes of glass in the door. Divided panes are those which are -- or appear to be -- divided into sections. Some models are made with a decorative inset of plastic, wood or metal which mimic the appearance of panes, but with added privacy.

If you’re willing to tackle the project yourself, it’s likely that the job can be done for around $600, although the cost could be less depending on the door and hardware you select. Bear in mind, the larger and more elaborate the door you choose, the more expensive the project will become. Your best bet – in terms of cost -- is to decide on a feasible budget and stick to it once you arrive at the hardware store.

One could easily spend several thousand dollars on a good quality decorative exterior door. Most doors sold by major hardware chains, especially exterior doors, come “pre-hung”. This means the hard part of the job has already been done for you. You simply have to install the door level and securely, and you are basically finished. After you’ve installed the door itself, you will need to install the hardware as well. Verify the fit and look of the hardware before you make your purchases. Also make sure the hardware you choose is intended for use with an exterior door, as interior hardware is not designed for the wear that your entrance will incur.

Interior doors, on the other hand, can be much less costly. You can expect to spend as low as between $100 and $200 to replace these doors. The lower cost is a result of the materials used and the intended purpose of the door. A bedroom door, for example, does not need to endure the elements of weather. As a result, cheaper materials can be used to manufacture it.

Once you have completed the job, you should perform a few tests before you put away your tools. Make sure the door swings properly, latches correctly, and is easily opened and closed. If anything is not lined up correctly, it will be quite obvious. Usually a few adjustments are all that you need to implement to finish the job. After you are satisfied with the door and hardware’s performance, re-install or replace the molding around the door. Then simply step back and enjoy the view from your new entrance.
