5 Questions To Ask Before Getting Plastic Surgery

The decision to get plastic surgery is a big one, and should be handled with plenty of thought and care.  While many of us may dream of changing the features we don’t like about ourselves, actually taking the plunge and getting a cosmetic procedure done is a big deal.  As with any surgical procedure, there are some questions you should ask your surgeon before going under the knife. Here are 5 of the most important ones.

Are you board-certified?

While any surgeon can perform plastic surgery procedures, it is in your best interest to only go with a doctor who has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  A board-certified plastic surgeon has gone through 6-9 years of training to ensure that they are fully capable at performing plastic surgery procedures. A board-certified Scottsdale plastic surgeon, for example, will have a number of credentials to their name, giving you peace of mind when making a decision.

Can you tell me about your experience and expertise?

Any good plastic surgeon will be able to share their experience and expertise with you, so don’t hesitate to ask.  A good rule of thumb is to go to a surgeon who is very familiar with the type of cosmetic procedure you want to have done.  For example, if you’re interested in rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon should frequently perform that type of surgery and feel confident in doing so.  If a plastic surgeon says that they haven’t had much experience performing the kind of surgery you desire, take that as a sign to look elsewhere.

What are the risks and complications of this procedure?

There are risks that come with just about any surgery, so it is important that your surgeon addresses these concerns upfront.  Aside from doing your own independent research, you should also speak with your doctor about the possible complications that could arise during or after your surgery.  Your doctor will be able to present you with the likelihood that you should face any complications and put you at ease before the big day.

Do you use a certified anesthesiologist?

Before your surgery, you should also inquire about the anesthesiologist who will be administering your anesthesia and try to meet them if possible.  It is extremely important that your surgeon uses a certified anesthesiologist to ensure that your surgery goes as smoothly and safely as possible. Additionally, some people tend to feel nauseous after waking up from anesthesia, so ask your surgeon if they are able to give you anti-nausea medication to prevent you from feeling sick post-operation.

How is the recovery process?

This is one of the most important questions you should ask your plastic surgeon.  The recovery time can vary depending on the type of procedure you’re getting, but it is important to know how long you’ll be spending away from work or school.  The first 24-48 hours after surgery are likely to me the most difficult, so make sure you’re fully prepared and know what to expect when you leave after your surgery.  Make sure to bring someone you trust the day of your surgery, as you will need someone to drive you home and take care of you during your recovery.
