Clean Out Clutter and Chaos: Organize Your Home for a Happier and Healthier Life

Americans, as a group, spend more than 9 million hours each year, looking for all sorts of different things. From keys and sunglasses to your wallet and phone, it’s easy to misplace items in a cluttered home.

While it’s nice to know you aren’t alone when it comes to disorganization, if you are ready to make a change and get organized for good, then you need to use the tips here.

Find a “Home” for Every Item 

One of the main reasons items pile up on tables, counters and even the floor is because they don’t have a proper, designated “home.” You need to take some time to ensure everything has a place where it lives.

Try to store items in the room where they are used. This can help ensure they are put away when you are done. Also, it’s a good idea to store similar items together. For items you use often, make sure you choose a storage location that’s easy to get to. After all, if you have to reach up to a high shelf to take down a platter or put a bowl away, the odds of it going back home are low.

Sort Through and Throw Away Clutter 

If you don’t need something, get rid of it. If you don’t use something, but don’t want to get rid of it, consider off-site storage, such as the services provided by SecurCare.

When you are trying to declutter your home, try to think about whether or not you really want to hang on to certain items. While books are great, they take up quite a bit of space. Consider going digital or using the public library.

When getting rid of clutter make sure to opt out of mailings from magazine companies and other advertisers, too. This will prevent even more clutter making its way into your home.

Don’t Head Out to Purchase Containers 

If you are trying to get your home organized, you may think you need to purchase all types of organization products. As a result, you may head to the closest store and purchase various types and sizes of boxes and bins.

While this may sound like a smart move, getting organized shouldn’t start with a shopping trip. Keep this for after you have gotten your home organized.

Dump All Your Duplicates 

Do you really need four hairbrushes or six spatulas? What about 22 coffee mugs? Even if you live with five coffee-lovers, you are probably not ever going to use that many coffee mugs at once.

Take some time to throw out or donate any duplicate items you may have. If you are purchasing new items, use the “one in, one out” rule. This states that for every new item you bring in, you get rid of something similar.

Also, if you are planning on a big purchase, such as a new television, figure out what you are going to do with your old one first. This will help prevent the accumulation of even more clutter in your home.
