I did. I went through high school with 1 pair of shoes a year. And the old ones were not tossed out, but kept and polished and stuffed with news paper. My folks were in the service (Air Force) and had gone through the depression and rationing from the war when they were young. I grew up in the 1970s. When my feet stopped growing, Mom told me to find apair of leather shoes that fit well, and buy two pair. One pair was put away and kept for "good." They became my shoes when the first pair grew too old to keep any longer. We didn't have church shoes and school shoes. I was lucky not to have to run barefoot in the summer!

Nobody should wear the same pair of shoes day after day because that is how they get stinky! Furthermore we need different footwear for different types of weather and times of year, for work, for relaxing, for exercise and other activities, and for special occasions. There is no way that a woman owned only 3-5 pairs of shoes just 20 years ago! Maybe that number is more accurate for the 1940's.

One pair of trainers? Sure, in a climate where it doesn't rain year-round or snow heavily in winter. Wearing mud-spattered trainers to the office does not make for a professional impression, nor is soggy footwear particularly comfortable! A pair of good walking boots is essential. Flats do not provide adequate support for any amount of walking but may be serviceable as office shoes. If one does much exercise it is also necessary to have a pair of supportive sports shoes (as opposed to casual trainers). I agree that most women have far too many pairs of shoes (myself included) but the concluding paragraph seems far too simplistic.
