In reply to Windy. That was always my thought process too. If you're comfortable eating off a plate in a restaurant that's been used previously (probably hundreds or thousands of times) by other people who potentially have illnesses etc that are actually contagious to other humans why is your own dog licking it before it's washed such a big deal. Especially considering the fact most dog illnesses are not transmissible to humans.

In reply to Andrew Caldwell. That's pretty unlikely unless you are literally teaching them/allowing them to eat from the table. In that case the fact it's a human plate would be irrelevant. If your dog was inclined to steal things directly from the table (which again has nothing to do with the plates they are served on) it wouldn't matter what they eat from. For example if I prepare my dog's dinner in her dog bowl and leave it on the table or bench and leave the room she won't steal it even though it's in her bowl because she knows she only eats what I give her or place on the ground. She doesn't care what type of plate it is.

In reply to Monica. I would never eat in your house off a small plate then. It is ethical to let any human visitors to your house know this or to keep separate plates for your guests. It is disgusting to let animals eat off the same plates as humans.

My story is a little different than dogs licking their owners plates. My girlfriend and I were at the house of friends who own a bulldog. We were eating with them at the table when our friends started mopping slobber off their dogs mouth on a napkin and placing the rolled up napkin on the paper plates they were eating from. I became so disgusted that I couldn’t eat and everyone was asking what was wrong? My girlfriend saw the napkin on the plates but didn’t know that it contained dog slobber until I told her later. After I told her she was appalled as well. Needless to say we will not be eating at that house again.

In reply to Shannon B.. A dishwasher does not sterilize, but it does clean and sanitize. For home food preparation, that's all that's necessary.

A few simple rules and everyone’s happy:
1. Don’t feed your dog certain items (garlic, onions, mustard, chocolate, cooked bones)
2. Put the plate or bowl on the floor by their feeding dish, or scrape leftovers into the dish
3. Don’t overfeed

There. That’s all you need to worry about. No dog is going to get on the counters or table unless you’ve allowed it or encouraged it. I’ve had 5 long-lived, healthy, happy puppers. Haters and OCD’ers gonna hate and OCD.

I have seen humans do things with their mouths which would make a dog blush ! What about all the terrible things that humans spread to other humans like AIDS, hepatitis and the flue ? I have never heard of a dog infecting a human with those awful diseases ! Whatever you do, be sure that the dishes are sanitary before putting them away, and no one will get sick.
