Moving house: essential tips

No matter the reasons for seeking a new home, moving can be one of the most stressful experiences of anyone’s life. That’s probably the reason why many people prefer to stay put if they can. If you’re going to up sticks and move to a new home in the near future, these essential tips could help smooth the process and ensure the best outcome.

1. Start packing as early as possible

As soon as you have your moving date, it’s time to start packing. Getting everything into boxes as early as you can will make packing up all your belongings seem less daunting, and it also gives you a chance to declutter as you go along. This way, you’ll only take with you what you need. Alternatively, you could hire your removals company to do your packing for you as well, which might be the quicker option if you’re struggling to find the time to do it yourself.

2. Organise a storage unit

If you have lots of furniture and possessions but don’t have the space for them in your new home, ensuring their continued safety often means putting them into storage. Some of your possessions may currently have absolutely no monetary value, for example, the first comic books you ever read, the Barbie/Action Man figures you were given at an early age, and the bulky photograph albums, book collections, and ornaments from your childhood, but this might change in the future. Boxing up all the treasures you’ve acquired in your lifetime shouldn’t take too long, and also enables you to declutter. Arranging pro storage for a box or two is an affordable and practical solution for anybody!

3. Label your boxes

This point seems obvious, but with everything that’s going on around the house, most people forget to label their boxes. This makes it easier for your removals company to put the right boxes in the right rooms at your new house, and it will make unpacking quicker as well. If you’re really organised, make an inventory for each box so you can unpack your belongings in a logical order.

4. Pack an ‘essentials’ box

Put your kettle, coffee, tea and milk in an ‘essentials’ box so you can unpack this first. Other items worth keeping within easy reach are phone chargers, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bedding and a few sets of clothes. We’d also advise keeping any valuables and important documents in your possession as well so you know where they are.

There are a number of tips we haven’t mentioned here, so it’s worth doing your research or asking family and friends for any moving and packing advice too.
