Visiting Montreal – regardless of the time you spend here – will change you. The city is distinctly different from other North American cities, retaining much of the Old World charm and grandeur. The architecture reflects this, as does the philosophical approach of native Montrealers. “Don’t worry, be happy” is an unspoken mantra, as is “eat, drink, and be merry.” You might have heard of the city’s gourmet reputation. Chefs trained from all over the world have settled here to tease the palates of even the most hardened meat-and-potatoes people. When it comes to dining, Montreal is top-notch.

Embrace the Montreal Winter

When it comes to winter, Montreal is also… well, top-tier. If you don’t particularly thrive in cold weather, stay away until mid-May. This year, for example, Montreal’s temperature is hovering around 14, 15, and 16°C, and it’s already May. It’s nippy, and you’ll rarely see the locals in shorts and tank tops at this time of year. Winter has a way of clinging tenaciously in Montreal—that’s the bad news. The good news is that the warm hearts of Montrealers more than make up for the province’s harsh weather. This is why, as soon as the warm weather sets in, Montreal wakes up from a long slumber. The streets come alive with sounds; tourists feel and experience the gaiety in the air, stimulating both physical and mental appetites.

Montreal is for everyone. It welcomes all kinds of temperaments. If you like being around people, rubbing elbows with fellow tourists, locals, and members of the ethnic communities, Montreal won’t disappoint you. The city plays host to more than 40 festivals each year, attended by the excited and the exciting. If you love jazz, Montreal is the place to be in July. If humor is more your style, comedy clubs have their doors wide open. Are you a crowd avoider who would rather spend some solitary time? We have regal, ornate churches and basilicas. The Notre-Dame Basilica is a favorite in Old Montreal (it’s where Céline Dion had her grandiose wedding years ago), or you could visit St. Joseph’s Oratory—an imposing cathedral where people come to worship, lie on the grass, or marvel at the hundreds of crutches left by once-crippled beings who were able to walk again.

Ah, yes, the food. The native dish is called poutine, but this is more of a 7/11-style fast food. French fries smothered in brown gravy and topped with crumbled cheese—definitely not something you’d want to eat every day if you’re watching your waistline, but it’s something you should try at least once during your visit.

Walking Through Montreal

You say you like to walk? Excellent. If you want to take in the city on foot, start at the downtown core. Ask anyone for St. Catherine Street (if you go further east, you’ll hit the red-light district, which you can skip if you’re with your significant other). If you take Sherbrooke Street West, you’ll find the world-famous McGill University and fine boutiques that your wife or girlfriend will love—Cartier, Gucci, Oscar de la Renta, and Roots. Corporate offices and swanky buildings are also found downtown, including banks from Europe and Israel.

Don’t forget Old Montreal. If you’re short on time, ride a horse-drawn carriage. The horsemen are bilingual and can easily switch between French and English at the snap of a finger. Visit Place Jacques-Cartier, where public performers—jugglers, singers, dancers, artists, painters, and merchants—greet visitors warmly. You can dance in the open air to salsa, rap, or simply linger and listen to violins and guitars playing old French favorites. Old Montreal is a miniature version of Europe, and it’s a city where marriage proposals tend to pop up, even when unplanned. It’s that kind of city, you see. So, ladies…

The Montreal metro is an intricate network of engineering genius. Talk has it that our subway system is the quietest in the world because the cars run on rubber wheels. We’ve always doubted this, however, because while there’s rubber everywhere, it’s still quite noisy. But oh, so efficient! The subway map is user-friendly and color-coded, so a visitor who spends an hour underground could easily become a subway guide. The names of some stops might be difficult to pronounce, but the French and English have learned to compromise. Some stations can be tongue-twisters, like Honoré-Beaugrand or Angrignon, but English speakers will find Peel, McGill, and Snowdon much easier to pronounce.

By the way, one last note on food: If you’re not into French cuisine, there are thousands of ethnic restaurants guaranteed to tickle your taste buds: Greek, Vietnamese, Ethiopian (yes, Ethiopian), Polish, Russian, Iranian, Chinese (what country doesn’t have at least one Chinese restaurant?), and Jewish (Montreal’s smoked meat is newsworthy, and so are the bagels). Celebrities who have tasted our Fairmount bagels even have them flown over to as far as Burbank, California, and Tokyo!

• Crescent Street – A stylish hangout for yuppies. Fancy, expensive restaurants, bistros, and cafes are perfect for sitting for hours, sipping coffee or Margaritas, and watching the whole city go by.
• Olympic Stadium – Another architectural masterpiece (though the roof has been controversial), it earned the nickname “Big Owe” (originally “Big O” for Olympic) because it turned out to be a drain on taxpayers. After riding the Stadium’s funicular elevator to the top, you can hop over to the Botanical Gardens, which cover 74 hectares (185 acres) with 31 different sections, including two sponsored by China and Japan. There are also ten greenhouses, ensuring it operates year-round.
• Biodôme de Montréal – If you’re feeling the environmental bug, head over here. It features four ecosystems, including 4,000 trees and plants, 6,000 animals, and climates ranging from tropical to polar.

That’s just a sampling of what awaits you in Montreal. On your next visit, when you have more time, plan for a two-day trip to Quebec City (bring along your French phrasebook), or take in the mountain air up north (Laurentian region) or east (Eastern Townships)—two playgrounds for the wealthy and the not-so-wealthy. Telus SPARK – Science Centre

Currently located in the heart of downtown, this science centre is sure to entertain. It is considered one of the best in North America, attracting more than 300,000 visitors last year, including more than 50,000 school children.

There are three main exhibit areas: The Amazement Park, Demo Theatre and the Discovery Dome. The centre is also committed to featuring at least three travelling exhibits and films per year.

Heritage Park

Have you ever wished you could go back in time? With one visit to Heritage Park, you’ll be able to do just that. The large, 127-acre “village” is set in the 1930’s and 40’s and is designed to educate visitors on Alberta’s rich history. Topics covered include the history of beer-making in Alberta at the Big Rock Interpretive Brewery and an introduction of the automobile and how it impacted development at the Gasoline Alley Museum. If you need a break from learning, several shops, including an antique portrait studio, await your visit.

One of the great things about Heritage Park is its interactive nature. You will have the chance to actually “meet” fur traders, railway workers and prairie town folk. Take a ride on an authentic steam train, Calgary’s only paddlewheer, or simply enjoy the antique midway.

The Calgary Tower

Cameras are definitely recommended. The Calgary Tower has been a fixture in the city skyline since 1968. It is one of the first of its kind and without a doubt, provides the best view in Calgary. One of the unique features about the tower is its association with the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, where a flame was kept lit atop the tour for their duration. It is also lit for special occasions, like Canada Day and in support of the local NHL team, the Calgary Flames, should they be in the playoffs for the Stanley Cup.

The tower also features and “Observation Deck” where people can stand on glass floor and look 525 feet down to the ground. The glass floor is said to be strong enough to hold several Hippopotamus’’ so fear not. And since there is nothing by seamless glass in front of you, visitors report felling as though they are “suspended in air.”

The Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo was one of the first zoos in Canada and is still one of the largest. It houses more than 1,000 animals and 290 different species. The zoo itself is split into areas reflected by animal types and their associated biospheres. These include: Australia, Botanical Gardens, Canadian Wilds, Destination Africa, Eurasia, Prehistoric Park and South America.

The zoo offers activities for the whole family all year. In fact, the only day you’ll find its doors closed is Christmas day. During the summer months, you can take a leisurely stroll through the animal exhibits. In the winter season, the much-anticipated “Zoolights” festival is held. This display, made up of three million lights and based on the animals in the zoo, is one of the most cherished events in the city.

The Glenbow Museum

Despite its name, the Glenbow is more than simply one of the largest museums in Canada. It is, in fact, a museum, art gallery and library all in one. The Military Museum

South Africa Has Many Different Regions

Stretching to the southern tip of Africa, this “rainbow nation” boasts a variety of regions with vastly different climatic conditions, offering unique activities throughout.
The West Coast, which starts at Cape Point (the Cape of Good Hope) and runs north past Cape Town to Alexander Bay at the mouth of the great Orange River (which also forms part of the border with Namibia), faces the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the rest of the country—including some of the Southern Cape, as well as the coastal regions of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)—faces the warmer Indian Ocean.

In contrast, parts of South Africa are desolate semi-deserts, while other areas are warm and tropical. Cape Town, the first area settled by European explorers in the 17th century, enjoys a comfortable Mediterranean climate.

Different areas also offer distinct experiences. For example:

• In spring, you can witness magical displays of wildflowers along the West Coast, just north of Cape Town.
• Near Cape Town, you’ll find a wide array of winelands, many of which produce world-class wines.
• The vast, dry Groot (Great) Karoo offers places to explore that many tourists miss—everything from awe-inspiring canyons to quaint villages and unexpected flora and fauna.
• The Klein (Small) Karoo is also rich in offerings, including the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock, home to one of the world’s rarest large animal species, along with many other wildlife and bird species.
• Eastern Gauteng is a prime area for seeing the Big Five and offers numerous wildlife experiences.
• If you want to be near the coast while still seeing animals, there are superb smaller game reserves in KZN.
• The Drakensberg Mountains in KZN are another favorite destination—away from the cities but with access to excellent hotels.
• KZN offers some great surfing, but the real surfer’s paradise is Cape St. Francis in the Eastern Cape.
• The Eastern Cape also features a rich wildlife scene, with the best elephant reserve being Addo Elephant Park north of Port Elizabeth.

These are just a few of the gems South Africa has to offer.
However, due to the vast distances, careful planning is essential to ensure you see what most appeals to you, especially if you’re on a limited timeline.

Planning a Holiday in South Africa

If you’re visiting friends or family, their residence will likely be your base. Otherwise, you’ll need to make some decisions.
One of your main decisions will be whether to stay in one place for most or all of your trip, getting to know the area and its offerings, or to travel widely and experience the country’s incredible diversity. Another option is to base yourself in one place and then travel for a day or more at a time, following a pre-planned route. This is typically what a tour operator would suggest, but you could also stop wherever you find something interesting—whether it’s a beach, a village, a national monument, or a quaint country hotel.

A great way to start planning your holiday is by creating a wish list of activities you’d like to do and specific sights you want to see. For example, you might want to spend time on the beach, enjoy access to top-notch restaurants, or take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain. This iconic landmark, which was named one of the New7Wonders of Nature on November 11, 2011, shares its prestigious designation with other natural wonders such as the Amazon, Vietnam’s Halong Bay, Argentina’s Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island off the Korean coast, Komodo in Indonesia, and the underground rivers of Puerto Princesa in the Philippines. You can experience all of that from Cape Town—unless, of course, you want warmer sea temperatures! The Atlantic Ocean here is cold, although it can be a relief on a really hot day.

Ultimately, you’ll need to prioritize what’s most important to you.

Here are a couple of ideas you might not have considered:

Combine Wine Tasting with Other Adventures

While all of South Africa’s wine routes are in the Western Cape, they are not all located near Cape Town. Some, such as Groot Constantia, where Simon van der Stel established some of South Africa’s first vineyards in the 17th century, are close to the city. In fact, the country’s very first wine route is in Stellenbosch, with more than 148 venues to choose from.
Some wine routes are a little further out, like Paarl and Franschhoek, which are not only home to amazing wines but also world-class restaurants, smaller eateries, and charming shops you won’t want to leave. From there, you could continue on to the Swartland and the West Coast, which is famous for its spring flowers. The West Coast alone has three of South Africa’s largest wine cellars, along with another 12, with even more in the Swartland region.

If you’re not interested in flowers but have always wanted to see whales, head to Hermanus and nearby Walker Bay, where you can enjoy some amazing wine, stunning beaches, fantastic restaurants, and charming villages. It’s also a perfect spot for photography.

You could also focus on what’s been called the longest wine route in the world—if you can find a driver who isn’t tempted by some of the world’s best wines! Starting in Paarl, northwest of Cape Town (just about an hour’s drive away), it stretches all the way to Kareedouw near Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. Along the way, you’ll pass through Worcester (home to the world-famous KWV brandy), Robertson, and the charming town of Ashton. By the time you reach Calitzdorp, you’ll be in the Klein Karoo, known as the port wine capital of South Africa, and heading towards Oudtshoorn, famous for its ostriches.

From Port Elizabeth, you can either head north to Gauteng or continue up the coast to KwaZulu-Natal.

Seek out Hotels and Resorts with Hot Springs and Spas

South Africa is home to numerous hot springs and spas, many of which offer superb accommodation. Not all of them are excessively expensive (though more affordable options may have less luxurious accommodations). If you’d enjoy relaxing in natural spring water after a day of exploring, consider staying at a hot spring resort for a few days.
Here are a few examples:

• The Caledon Casino, Hotel, and Spa is just a couple of hours’ drive from Cape Town and well worth a visit, even if you don’t stay. The mineral-rich spring water is heated to around 149°F (65°C). The water won top prize at a Chicago World Fair in the 19th century for its medicinal properties.
• About two hours from Cape Town, Goudini Spa offers a more rustic experience. If you’re into camping, this is a good option—though the water is very hot!
• In Limpopo Province, a couple of hours north of Johannesburg, you’ll find several natural hot springs. Die Oog (Eye) in the Waterberg, known for its wildlife, is one of the best.
• KZN boasts a variety of hot spring venues, including Natal Spa Hot Springs & Leisure Resort, located on the Battlefields Route—a popular spot for those interested in British-Boer history. There are also plenty of activities for the whole family.

For many, the ultimate vacation is time spent relaxing on the sand with a sparkling blue sea stretched out before your eyes. Other beach lovers can’t wait to jump on a surfboard, jet ski, boat, or any other sort of watercraft for a fun day in the sun. • St. Lucia – One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, St. Lucia is located at the midway point of this Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. This small island came to the attention of the world in the 1990s, and its tourism industry has grown in leaps and bounds. However, it still maintains a wonderful small-island ambiance. Bordered by the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, you’ll find everything from golf courses to rainforests and plenty of beaches.
• Hawaii – The beaches in the 50th U.S. state are so plentiful that it’s hard to choose just one. Furthermore, Hawaii’s beaches are diverse; some are romantic, others are family-oriented, and still others are ideal for surfers. Among the most popular are famous Waikiki Beach and the North Shore beaches of Oahu, Ka’anapali or Lahaina Beaches on Maui, Honaunau Bay on the Big Island, and Poipu Beach on the Garden Isle of Kauai.
• Cancun – This eastern Mexican town on the Gulf of Mexico was created specifically for the tourism industry. Hand-picked by the Mexican president to increase tourism, development began in the 1970s, and word quickly spread of this wonderful new Mexican paradise. But what happens when you pitch your tent, start roasting the marshmallows and then are rudely interrupted by camping neighbors whose idea of a good time is blaring Metallica and a downing a bottle of Jack? If their campfire is rowdier than yours, is it rude? Obviously, they too tried to escape society in order to secure a place in the woods void of sirens and interruptions and are just trying to unwind. Is that really so wrong?

The reality is that manners in the great outdoors are just as important as they are anywhere else in the world. Just because you are in a somewhat secluded campground does not mean that rules of society do not exist. However in order to protect yourself from having a vacation ruined by rowdy teenagers and to ensure you aren’t ruining someone else’s vacation, here are a few rules of the road when it comes to learning how to be courteous when camping.

Firstly, understand that the National Institute of Crime Prevention seems to think that campgrounds are fairly safe havens. However, you should also be aware while camping that the remote nature of campgrounds can also make them a haven for criminals looking to hide away. For this reason, it is a good idea to make sure that you have both the means (cell phone) and contact information for local police departments you can call in case you get into trouble.

Manners in the Great Outdoors

1. Follow the Rules About Noise! Most campgrounds have policies about noise levels and provisions about how late you can play music etc. (9pm for most camping facilities) If you are going camping with a group of friends, and plan to stay up all hours of the night raising Cain, you need to ask your host campground to give you a camping location that is far, far away from other campers. Camping is the #3 destination of FAMILIES, which means that by midnight there will likely be many children sleeping. Your idea of a party is likely very different from those who have children along.
2. Don’t Act Like an Animal. Sure, you are in the great outdoors amongst bears, coyotes, and foxes. That doesn’t mean you have to regress to your animalistic behaviors. If you are at a campground, that means other people are there as well and they don’t want to hear you screaming and yelling, see you having sex with your partner or watch you running around naked. Same goes for using the bathroom. Popping a squat or ‘watering a tree’ may feel like ‘roughing it’ but is not something that your camping mates will want to witness.
3. Keep Litter in Its Place. Certainly, there are trashcans around the campground. Throwing your beer bottles or cans into the fire and leaving them there is not only rude, but is an eye soar. Plus, reckless and irresponsible behavior like that causes campgrounds to raise their rates over time.
4. Listen (Not Love) Thy Neighbor. If the ‘man of the tent’ from next door comes by and asks you politely if you could keep it down, try to oblige. You might think he should find another destination for his young brood – but the truth is you are sharing the space. Plus, if you don’t there’s a good chance your neighbor will call security or the police.
5. Avoid Firearms or Fireworks. Chances are there are rules against it. But firing your guns into the forest, hitting trees or holding a little target practice are not just dangerous and disruptive but illegal as well. Remember, that fireworks cause thousands of forest fires each and every year. If you want to use them, make sure you have permission from the camping facility, and do them at a reasonable time. Might even want to invite fellow campers to your site to enjoy the festivities.
6. Be Aware of Boundaries. Don’t walk through someone else’s campsite. Also, keep lights pointed away from other campers and try to pick campsites that are as far away from others as possible. You should also stay away from setting up camp near trails or other places where your activities will be difficult to ignore.
7. Turn the Generator OFF! Sure, having the generator can make your excursion to nature a little more comfortable. Remember however that generators are loud, and you shouldn’t run it all day and night.
8. Watch Your Alcohol Consumption. If you are getting hammered, it’s easy to forget all the rules of human etiquette and you will be unaware of how loud (and obnoxious) you are being. Alcohol can be part of the fun, but try to keep it under control lest you become out of control.

If you have problems with other campers, try taking it up with them first – before calling security or the local police. If they seem resistant, or have had too much to drink – just walk away from the campsite and allow security to handle it. In the woods, without close proximity to others things can get out of hand very easily.

Another word to the wise is to thoroughly check out a campground before visiting. Don’t just go to the campsite’s website, but look through forums and other panels where you can get a realistic testimonial from other people who have been there. You will find that some campgrounds cater more to families than they do to wild young people looking to have a good time. Choose wisely. And if you aren’t happy with your campsite or sense that your camping neighbors may cause you and your family problems, ask to be moved to another site. One of the best things about camping is that there is plenty of room to move around and get away from people if you need to.

Traveling with your children is a great way to bond as a family. These holidays also offer educational, cultural opportunities and, of course, fun—something families often lack in today’s busy world.

However, vacationing with children isn’t always easy, especially during the early years when some holiday destinations may not be suitable for little ones. Even as kids grow into tweens and teens, choosing the right holiday can still be tricky. There are many factors to consider, including the destination, mode of travel, vacation length, what to pack, and more.

Choosing the Right Destination

The success of your vacation often depends on your chosen destination. Thanks to air travel’s evolution, the choices are endless, and with the internet, researching potential destinations is easier than ever. The information you need to make an informed decision is right at your fingertips.

If you’re a city lover, you might choose one of the world’s great urban areas, such as New York, Rome, London, Amsterdam, or Singapore. But is a city holiday suitable for your 4-year-old? Or perhaps you love the beach. But which beaches and resorts are the most family-friendly?

It’s often best to begin by determining the types of activities your family enjoys or which are appropriate for your children’s ages.

• Beaches and Watersports – If sun and surf are what you seek, there are plenty of options for family-friendly holidays. If you’ve got little ones, choose a beach where the water is shallow and the sand is perfect for building castles. Older kids will enjoy beaches that offer activities like boogie-boarding, surfing, and jet skiing. Ideally, select a resort close to the beach to avoid tiring treks to the water and lugging heavy gear like chairs and umbrellas.
• Cities/Sightseeing – Many families enjoy adding a bit of education to their vacations. This is ideal if your children are old enough to appreciate museums, ancient ruins, antique homes, and similar attractions. Little ones, however, may get bored on sightseeing trips. If you decide to sightsee, try to keep it kid-oriented. For example, many U.S. cities offer Duck Tours—rides on amphibious vehicles that travel on both land and water, with narration by entertaining guides. Many cities also have interactive science and technology museums.
• Theme Parks – Theme parks are probably the most kid-friendly vacations on the planet, but even visits to places like Disney World can be challenging with young children. Be sure to pace your days to include breaks, snacks, and possibly an afternoon nap. Make sure the rides are appropriate for your child’s age to avoid scaring them.
• Winter Sports – If your family loves the snow, there are many fantastic destinations to explore, from the Alps in Europe to the Canadian Rockies and Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains. If your children are too young to ski, ensure the resort offers an accredited babysitting service, or plan to take turns skiing and babysitting. Be prepared for extreme temperatures, and remember that kids may forget to tell you they’re cold while playing in the snow!

Cruises

Many families view cruises as the ideal vacation—and they may be right! On a cruise, everything is at your fingertips, and you don’t have to travel far to experience new destinations. Choose the right cruise, and not only will you visit amazing places, but you’ll also have access to top-notch children’s programs that keep your kids entertained all day long.

Most cruise programs for kids begin at age 3, though some accept younger children if they are potty-trained. Additionally, many cruises offer fantastic teen programs, ensuring even picky teen travelers will be satisfied. These programs feature age-appropriate activities led by trained professionals who enjoy engaging with your kids. Plus, you’ll know your children are safe while you enjoy adult activities or some leisure time.

Cruise lines with the best kids/teen programs include Disney Cruise Lines, Carnival Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean. Luxury cruise lines may allow children but tend to cater more to adults.

All-Inclusive Resorts

Similar to cruises, all-inclusive vacations offer a stress-free experience. Many family-friendly all-inclusive resorts are located in places like Mexico and the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. These resorts, like cruises, offer children’s programs (sometimes included in the price, though some may cost extra). Families also appreciate all-inclusive resorts because lodging, food, and activities are all included, so there’s no need for a rental car unless you want to explore the area, which is sometimes discouraged in certain Caribbean destinations. Once you arrive, you won’t have to leave until it’s time to go home!

How Will We Get There?

After choosing your destination, consider how you’ll get there. Will you drive or fly? Of course, in some cases, you won’t have a choice, but for others, both options have their pros and cons.

• Road Trips – Every year, thousands of families set off on road trips. Some may take days to reach their destination, while others only travel for a few hours. Before choosing a driving trip, think about your children’s reactions to car rides. If they’re too young to entertain themselves, a multi-day trip might not work. However, if they’re old enough to play video games or read, a road trip will likely be fine. No matter the age, remember to make frequent stops for food and restroom breaks. Even older kids need to stretch their legs!
• Plane Trips – If you can afford it and your kids don’t like long car rides, consider flying even for a nearby destination. Regardless of your destination, always bring plenty of activities to keep your kids entertained. Remember, if the kids get restless, you can stop on a road trip, but you can’t leave the plane. Cranky kids can make the flight uncomfortable for everyone. Be sure to carry snacks and juice in case of delays—keeping a full stomach means a happy child.

Trip Length

Being away from home for an extended period can be difficult for some children, while others are born travelers. If this is your first time traveling with your child, start with a short trip to a nearby destination and work your way up to longer vacations. And don’t forget to bring something familiar from home, like a favorite blanket or stuffed toy, which can help comfort your child if they’re feeling unwell during your vacation.

What to Pack

Before you travel, research your destination to determine the expected weather and appropriate clothing. The last thing you want is for your child to be too cold or too hot! Tennessee has over 845 miles of streams with wild, self-sustaining trout populations of Brook, Brown and Rainbows, and hundred more miles of regularly-stocked streams. These are almost all located in the beautiful Southern Appalachian mountains of East Tennessee. 220 miles of trout streams are located right in the Smokey Mountains National Park. The only ‘native’ trout in TN. is the Brook Trout. Rainbow trout were introduced into the area in the late 1880s from the Western U.S. Brown Trout were imported from Scotland and Germany around the same time. All three species flourish in the cool, clean streams and rivers of the Volunteer State.

Some of the best stream that I fish here are:

• Hiwassee River – my favorite, probably because I live nearby. This is a semi-fast moving small river with numerous rapids up to Class-II. I have fly fished all over the U.S, and overseas, and I would rate the Hiwassee as the absolute best Dry Fly stream in the country, without reservation. It’s a great river for easy floating in a raft, kayak or canoe. Most of the river is wade-able as well. It is also the home of the rare Snail Darter. The Hiwassee is divided in three sections, each with it’s own characteristics. The entire river runs from the Powerhouse in Towns County, west to the Tennessee River just a little northeast of Chattanooga. The Upper Hiwassee runs from the Powerhouse to Reliance, Tn. It is the most popular area and gets the most fishing pressure. It has good access, with a road paralleling much of the stream. All major NE hatches are on this stream. Fishing is great all year here. This section has trophy-size Rainbows, and I have caught many big Browns here as well. The Middle Hiwassee runs from Reliance to the bridge at US Highway 411. There is a free public boat ramp at the Charleston City Dock with a picnic table and bathrooms. This section is best in April, May and June, and has phenomenal Caddis hatches. This section also has a good population of monster catfish, Smallmouth Bass, and Redear Sunfish (Shellcrackers). The Lower Section runs from the 411 Bridge to the junction of the Tennessee River at Patty Bridge. This section is best in March-June, and also has a huge Caddis hatch. It also has bass, catfish and panfish.
• Clinch River – The Clinch runs from the Kentucky border near Kingsport, to the Tennessee River in Kingston, Tn. The best trout fishing is below the TVA Dam below Lake Norris. Here be monster trout. This is where I caught the biggest freshwater trout in my life, a mean 24-lb, 9 oz. Brown Trout with a really bad attitude. The State Record Brown also came from here, and was 28 lbs, 12 oz. 5-10 pounders are not uncommon. And I have never caught a rainbow smaller than 4 lbs here, although I am sure there are smaller ones in there someplace. This is the top destination if you want really, really big trout, but beware, these trout are much more wary than in other places, and the fishing is much more challenging. The State Record Rainbow came out of Ft. Patrick Henry Reservoir, and weighed 16 lbs, 4 oz. I’d like to see some of those streams up North try to match that………..
• Great Smokey Mountains National Park -Near the outstanding tourist destination of Gatlinburg, the best entrance to the park is in Townsend, Tn. At least once a year, me and the Mrs. check in at the Docks Motel. She cruises the wonderful shops, and I assault the park trout population. Fishing in the park is outstanding all year for Brook, Rainbow and Brown Trout. These are all wild, and take much more patience and technique to catch. This is classic fly fishing at it’s best. Some of the better streams are Abrams (especially right below the waterfall), the Little River (right behind the Docks Motel), and the Middle Prong. Brown Trout are best in October, and Brookies are best in May-June. Rainbows are everywhere, all year. And while you are there, be sure to stop in at Grandma’s Kitchen for a huge bowl of gravy, and some of the best biscuits known to humankind. Accommodations at the Docks, and the other hotels in the area are as good as it gets, and very reasonable. I’ve already booked my room at the Docks for this year in October. There is a big brown out there with my name on it.
• Tellico -The Tellico River is one of the most diverse rivers in the state. It flows from North Carolina into the Natanhala National Forest, through Monroe County, Tn, and in to the Holston River. It comes out of the Unicoi Mountain Gorge, and across the Tellico Plains. You can fish the mountain part, that rivals the beauty of any stream in the US, or go a little farther downstream and fish the flatter parts. Fishing is great here all year long. There are also rare Snail Darters here. One of my favorite places is below the Bald River Falls, an 80-foot waterfall where the Bald River flows into the Tellico. The trout here are big and mean. 5-7 pound Browns and Rainbows are not unusual. Another good place is Turkey Creek, near Sweetwater, Tn. This is a scenic stream that feeds into the Tellico, and has some of the most beautiful and peaceful scenery your likely to ever see. It proves the saying that trout don’t live in ugly places.

There are many, many more outstanding trout fisheries in Tennessee, much too many to list here. I could go on and on, but as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Tn. also has some of the best Smallmouth Bass, and White Bass fisheries around, all of which can be caught on a fly rod. And of course, panfish are everywhere. I regularly fly fish for crappie in Lake Ocoee, lake Chickamauga, and Lake Nickajack. These lakes also have great fly fishing for Freshwater Striped Bass, and one of the fastest growing fly fishing sports, angling for carp. The best way to evaluate fly fishing in TN. Is to come on down, grab a rod, put on your fishing boots and waders and enjoy some real Southern Hospitality, and outstanding angling opportunities.
