Why Furniture isn’t Created Equally

Life is all about choices, and furniture is no different. Manufacturers decide on the market for which they want to cater, and then make their products accordingly. This doesn’t mean that a manufacturer who is aiming at budget items consciously decides to turn out bad workmanship. In fact expensive items may be badly made simply because upmarket, classy designs often incorporate more difficult joints and features that take experience and skill to produce. Inexpensive furniture may be well or badly made; it’s up to you to recognize degrees of quality.

In fact it is essential that you check all furniture before you buy it, however cheap or expensive it may be. As they say in the classics, the quality of a Monday item and a Friday item out of the same factory can vary tremendously. For example, you may have two seemingly identical tables to choose from, but one wobbles ever so slightly. Or perhaps you are buying an upholstered couch, and notice that the piping on the one has not been as neatly stitched as the other.

Comparing Different Types of Wooden Furniture

There are many different ways that wooden furniture is designed and made. A simple differentiation is that some items are engineered in a factory while others are carefully crafted by hand. Hand crafted furniture is usually a lot more expensive, simply because of the man-hours that go into making it. But weigh up the pros and cons, because a lot of factory-made quality furniture will look just as good and last just as long, without making the same sized dent in your pocket.

Also consider that there are many different ways that pieces of wood can be joined together. Some cheaper tables and chairs, for example, may be screwed together, while traditional designs will incorporate carefully cut, traditional joints. When you compare different items (irrespective of price differences), examine the joints. Even two simple kists – which are really just oversized, attractive storage boxes – may be assembled in totally different ways. For instance, one might simply be glued and pinned or screwed together; while the other is made with traditional, wedge-shaped dovetail joints that interlock and form a solid bond without the need for wood glue and metal fasteners.

When it comes to wooden items of furniture, it isn’t just the design that differentiates one type of item from the other. It is also the variety of wood that is used to make each item.

The two basic types of wood found in nature are softwood that comes from cone-bearing coniferous trees with prickly needles, like firs and pine trees; and hardwood, the type that is cut from a wide variety of deciduous trees. This can be confusing, since not all hardwoods are particularly hard, and some softwoods are in fact relatively hard, even harder than some hardwoods. For instance while ordinary pine is commonly used for mass produced furniture (including tables, chairs and beds), Oregon pine is a lot stronger and is often used to make better quality items. Douglas fir, which is another variety of softwood, tends to be hard, about the same consistency as European walnut, cherry wood and American elm.

Generally furniture made from hardwood is more expensive, possibly since it is more commonly used to make period-style traditional items, which of course require a lot more work. They are also not commonly mass produced (which generally brings down the price per unit).

Another factor is that not all wooden furniture is made from solid wood; many manufacturers specialize in making cabinets, tables and so on from manmade board, and many use veneers to finish items. This gives the impression of a solid wood surface, when it is in fact just a thin layer of wood that covers a much cheaper material.

A particularly popular man-made board is medium density fiberboard (MDF) which is beautifully smooth and easy to carve. Well made furniture from this material, if creatively designed and given a top quality finish, can compete with some of the most beautiful items made from solid wood – although it is true that many people want their wooden furniture to be made of solid wood and not from some sort of manmade fiber.

Finish is another factor to consider when buying wooden or solid board furniture. There are loads of options, the most important factor probably being the ability of the finish to withstand wear and tear, and staining. But having said that, surfaces that have been French polished have to be carefully maintained, because this is one surface that won’t withstand spills and scratches, yet furniture that has been finished this way is usually very pricey. So it’s not that easy to set hard and fast rules.

Comparing Beds and Mattresses

One item of furniture we all need is some sort of bed, with a good quality mattress that allows us to get a good night’s sleep. Some beds are available without mattresses, although most incorporate a base that is designed to be used to support the mattress and elevate you off the ground at the same time.

Beds with bases are commonly made of wood or metal, and include some gorgeous four poster and brass bedstead designs. Leather beds are also becoming a popular choice. In these instances, the bed itself is a feature, adding to the design and style of the room. Sleep sets, on the other hand, are generally more practical and comfort-orientated, but generally plain. However while many comprise simply the base and mattress, others do have bed heads, or can be installed with custom-made bed heads. So in this case you will be considering not only price and quality, but also what the bed will look like in your bedroom – which should be your personal haven.

Then there’s the choice of mattress. Of all the items of furniture in any home, mattresses are not the same, even if they look identical once the bedding is in place! They range from cheap foam, to new-age “memory foam”, and from regular sprung to specially-manufactured orthopaedic mattresses.

Alternatively you might prefer to opt for a cotton-stuffed futon that may be used on just about any type or style of base.

At the end of the day, whatever furniture you are going to buy should be of the best quality you can afford. As long as you are aware that not all furniture is created equally, you should be in a position to evaluate quality as well as value for money.

Size — Modern dining room tables vary in size depending on the shape and size of your dining space. However, most dining room chairs share some common characteristics. However, many people select the table first and then look for chairs afterward, leading to a more interesting set of furniture. Keep in mind that dining room chairs endure a lot of wear and tear. People sit on them, drop food, and may even place their hands or feet on them. Before choosing the material for the seat, it’s important to first consider the chair’s “frame.” Hardwoods such as maple, oak, and ash are excellent choices, as they can withstand weight and resist splintering.

The frequency of use will influence the type of material you select for the chair covering. If your chairs are only used during holidays or special occasions, you have more flexibility in material choice. You can opt for beautifully upholstered chairs that can be spot cleaned if needed. However, if your chairs will be used daily, select a more practical material. An all-wood chair with fabric cushions may be a better choice, as the cushions can easily be replaced if they become heavily soiled or if you want to change the fabric. Keep in mind that any fabric used should be stain-resistant, making it easier to clean when necessary.

Style — There’s no right or wrong style—if you like it, it works. However, there are some guidelines that might make selecting dining room chairs easier. Your dining room table may already suggest a certain style of chair. For example, if you have a sleek, modern glass table, pairing it with a heavy wooden chair may not be the best choice. If solid wooden furniture is badly neglected, even more drastic measures may be needed. For instance you may have to sand and even bleach the wood and then work on achieving a totally new finish.

There are various proprietary products that we can use to clean our furniture, but to a large extent your choice will be guided by the finish that has been applied to the wood. In other words the finish on your wooden furniture and the product you use to clean it both need to be compatible.

Finishes for Wood Furniture

Up until the early part of the 20th century, most wooden furniture was either French polished, or it was given one or more coats of varnish or some sort of lacquer. The most complicated of these finishing methods is undoubtedly French polish. Caring for furniture that has been French polished can also be demanding.

Way back in the 18th century, wood furniture was traditionally finished with a mixture of beeswax and brick dust. French polish, which was given its name due to the Frenchman who first devised the rather elaborate polishing method, then became the primary method of finishing high quality wood furniture (nobody bothered much with cheap items).

French polish creates a deep, lustrous finish that highlights the beauty of the wood grain, and provides a protective coating that needs only the occasional wax polish treatment to maintain it. The problem though is that the surface is not particularly tough, so any scratches and spills need to be attended to immediately. If, for instance, you spill nail varnish on a French polished table, you will lift the polish when you remove the nail varnish – and ultimately the entire table top is likely to need to be re-polished from scratch.

Today varnish, as such, is not favored, largely because it usually contains a stain that tends to alter and deaden the appearance of the wood. There are now a variety of sealants on the market (many that are clear, some that are tinted). These include polyurethane that can be used to produce a lovely sheen on the surface of wood. Antique wax and furniture oils are also available, and widely used.

The Best Ways to Clean Wood Furniture

The main products that people use to clean their wood furniture are those that are sold at supermarkets, general stores and hardware outlets. They include wax products, various oils, and products that are packaged into spray cans. Apart from wax, many products do not penetrate the surface of the wood, which means that they don’t actually “feed” the wood, in spite of claims and or a belief that they do. However, some of these products do have the ability to fill fine scratches and blemishes, thus adding protection to the surface and making it a lot easier to dust clean.

Having said that the finish given to wood furniture determines largely the way it is cleaned leads to the premise that certain products suit certain finishes. For instance, contemporary wood furniture that has been protected with hard-wearing lacquer usually only needs to be wiped clean with a damp cloth. If you spot finger marks on the surface, use a damp chamois leather to clean them off and then rub firmly with a soft, clean duster. If necessary you can also use a little furniture cream or spray polish on lacquered finishes from time to time.

If the item has been French polished, rubbing the surface with a soft, clean cloth is usually ample. You can also polish it now and then with a little wax or even with a tiny bit of furniture cream. Sticky marks should be removed immediately with a cloth soaked in warm, soapy water and then wrung out. If anyone spills alcohol (wine seems to be common problem, especially on dining tables), wipe it up immediately. Some people say that rubbing the area with the palm of your hand helps to restore some of the oil that the alcohol inevitably takes out of the wood.

Furniture that has been waxed should be cleaned in the same way as furniture that is French polished. Don’t use coarse rags or wax or polish that has been colored.

If you furniture has been varnished or sealed with some other proprietary product, it is usually sufficient to wash the surfaces with warm water and a little washing up liquid. Be sure to rinse with clean water and wipe dry.

Take special care when cleaning veneered surfaces because if liquid gets in under the veneer it can cause it to bubble – which is a dead giveaway that the wood is not solid.

Solid wood furniture that has not been finished or sealed in any way can be scrubbed clean and then oiled when they are completely dry.

How to Treat Stains and Marks on Solid Wood Furniture

No matter how careful you are, chances are that you’ll have to deal with spills and stains at some time or another.

• Drink stains, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and milk, should be mopped up immediately. Rub the palm of your hand over the spot, and/or wipe the surface with a little furniture oil or polish.
• Hot tea or coffee should also be mopped up immediately. If there is a heat mark on the surface, remove with methylated spirits or white spirit. When the damaged spot is totally dry, re-color wood if necessary and then polish first the damaged area, and the whole surface. It doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try.
• Blood and urine should be removed as quickly as possible. Blood is unlikely to stain treated wood, but if the wood hasn’t been treated you will have to sand the surface lightly and then swab with a little hydrogen peroxide – which is, of course, bleach. Use polish or oil to restore the surface color and feel.
• Adhesives of all types should be removed before they dry. Then rub the mark with salad oil or a little smooth peanut butter. You can also try cold cream.
• Candle wax, grease, fat and oil from food can usually be removed with a little lighter fuel. If the surface is veneered, cover the mark thickly with talcum powder and then several layers of tissue. Iron with a warm, dry iron to lift the wax or oil from the surface.

Homemade Furniture Products

If you really want to go back to basics, why not make your own furniture polish? An excellent recipe can be quickly whisked up using equal quantities of boiled linseed oil (don’t use raw linseed oil and don’t try and boil your own), turpentine oil (which is not as harsh as mineral turpentine) and ordinary white spirit vinegar. Mix the ingredients together well, pour into a bottle with a lid, and shake well. Apply the polish with a soft cloth and then wipe it off until the surface appears to be “dry”. Then polish with a soft, clean cloth or duster.

And here’s a homemade mixture that will remove polish build-up quickly and effectively. Combine a half cup of vinegar with half a cup of warm water. Immerse a clean, soft cloth in the liquid and then wring it out. Rub the surface using firm, even movements. Then dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Caring for Oak Furniture

There are different types of oak furniture, and naturally, some types may require special consideration. For example, green oak takes about four years to fully treat. Most outdoor oak furniture is created from green oak.

Unfinished oak furniture can be beautiful when kept up with, but it can become an eyesore if left to its own devices. Since oak tends to leak its own natural source of tannin from within the wood, staining of areas surrounding the furniture can happen. In almost every case, this tannin staining occurs with outdoor oak furniture. However, sometimes indoor oak furniture ends up with a particularly high natural occurrence rate of tannin.

Caring for oak furniture that is purchased untreated, whether outdoor or indoor pieces, is simple. All you need to do is wipe it down with a damp cloth. However, the cloth should never be dampened with water but with basic teak oil instead. If teak oil is unavailable, Danish oil makes a great substitute.

Oak furniture is “live wood,” which means it has the ability to withstand certain elements without sustaining unreasonable damage. At the same time, significant elements can cause major damage. For example, the small spill your child caused at the annual holiday party is unlikely to cause significant harm (as long as it wasn’t a carbonated beverage). On the other hand, the spill your child caused last week, which you didn’t find out about until it had sat for 12 hours, may leave a large mark.

Every couple of months, your oak furniture will need a thorough waxing, especially in its first few years in your home. Waxing helps keep the grain adhered, prevents cracking and crazing, and ensures that any finishes on your oak furniture remain in top shape. Waxing doesn’t work well if you make little circles or broad back-and-forth strokes. Instead, apply the wax with a clean cloth in the same direction as the grain, and then remove the wax by buffing in the same direction. This allows for optimum protection within the grain while minimizing streaking and air pockets.

Cheap furniture care products are cheap for a reason. The reason is usually that they don’t work very well. The ingredients in the cheap cans of furniture polish are less expensive for the manufacturer to obtain because they are not as potent. While some companies may package their product for store brands, these are few and far between. As a general rule, you should avoid the cheap cans of furniture care products.

When moisture from a drinking glass or other mild sources leaves a mark, nearly all oak furniture enthusiasts swear by a little overnight butter massage for their treasured pieces. You can use either butter or margarine, massage it into the marks, and then leave it to work its magic overnight. In the morning, when you wipe it clean, follow up with a polish. For stains and watermarks that are particularly stubborn, some people use a concoction of cigarette ashes and olive oil. This creates a paste (and a great conversation piece when you call your smoking friend and ask them to save their ashes for you!) that will ultimately dull the furniture. Polishing the area thoroughly after use can help bring back the shine. These home remedies also work for marks left by heat.

One of the most frustrating aspects of caring for oak furniture is dealing with scratches and dents that inevitably threaten to ruin an otherwise beautiful piece. However, there is a remedy for this—proceed with caution, as the repair process can also damage the furniture if done incorrectly.

Start the repair process by allowing a few droplets of water to soak completely into the dent or scratch. When the wood is moist, cover the area with a clean cloth and gently iron the spot with a warm iron. The combination of heat and moisture can literally erase the dent. Alternatively, for the more scientific types, the heat causes the wood to expand, and as the water dries, it creates permanency for the repair. If you accidentally burn the table during this process, toothpaste left on the burn overnight and polished the next morning can alleviate minor scorch marks.

Your late twenties and early thirties are a transitional time. You’ve outgrown the days of furnishing your home with a $20 hand-me-down sofa and milk crates, but you may not feel settled enough to invest heavily in decorating. After all, is this really your forever home? Furniture shopping can be daunting, especially if, like me, you’re not keen on collecting items just for the sake of owning them. Still, a few simple pieces can transform a space. I found myself staring at a piece that wasn’t stunning but fit my budget and seemed easy to transport and assemble. It wasn’t until the salesperson explained the downsides of pressboard furniture that I paused to listen.

I didn’t even know what pressboard furniture was. I just knew the piece in front of me was affordable, would fit in my car, and could be assembled at home. Apparently, I needed a crash course in the furniture industry, and the salesperson was happy to oblige.

“Some claim pressboard furniture is stronger due to its construction, but that’s not entirely true,” he said.

My blank stare must have tipped him off that I was clueless about the debate. He explained that pressboard furniture is made by pressing and heating various wood slats together to form a fabricated piece. This process results in uneven grains, knots, and imperfections, creating air pockets that weaken the material. Despite some arguing it’s stronger than average wood, this didn’t add up to me. The salesperson smiled as I started to catch on.

I was drawn to the convenience of pressboard furniture. It came in a box I could easily load into my car, assemble in the room it would stay in, and be done. No need for movers or heavy lifting—I could carry it piece by piece without straining my back. It looked decent enough for my calm home environment, so what did it matter if it wasn’t as strong as steel? Ignoring the salesperson’s advice, I bought the boxed piece, hauled it upstairs, and opened the instructions.

Lessons Learned from Pressboard Furniture

Assembly wasn’t my forte, but I figured the directions would be straightforward. Three hours on the living room floor later, I discovered a major downside of pressboard furniture: deciphering those instructions was a nightmare.
